SUNeVision Holdings Ltd., Hong Kong’s leading data center provider and the technology arm of Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd., has announced a strategic partnership with Green Valley Landfill Limited (GVL) and CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power), the city’s major power utility, to launch a renewable energy solution in Hong Kong.
This collaboration reflects the companies’ shared commitment to advancing sustainable business practices, reducing environmental impact, and supporting Hong Kong’s Climate Action Plan 2050 in pursuit of a greener digital economy.
In a symbolic gesture, Helen Lo, Director of Commercial at SUNeVision, received a site-specific CLP Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) from Lena Low, Senior Director of Customer Success and Experience at CLP Power, and Carl Lai, Project Manager at GVL.
Each unit in the REC represents renewable energy generated at GVL’s solar farm in the South East New Territories (SENT) Landfill, linking to part of SUNeVision’s data center energy consumption. The six-year agreement with CLP Power for these RECs reinforces SUNeVision’s dedication to sustainable energy use.
The SENT solar farm, projected to start operations in early 2025, will produce an estimated 1,200,000 kWh of renewable energy annually, resulting in an annual reduction of approximately 468 tonnes of carbon emissions—the equivalent of CO₂ absorption by about 20,000 trees.
This green initiative further aligns with SUNeVision’s mission to offer sustainable, high-capacity data center solutions as digitalization and AI adoption surge.
From MEGA-i to new-generation centers like MEGA IDC and MEGA Gateway, SUNeVision’s facilities uphold high environmental standards, employing energy-efficient technologies, purchasing CLP RECs, installing solar panels, and applying iPaint radiative cooling.
Lo highlighted SUNeVision’s commitment, saying, “At SUNeVision, we proudly embrace our parent company Sun Hung Kai Properties’ ethos of sustainability. This pioneering renewable energy initiative with CLP Power and GVL—a joint venture by SHKP, Veolia, and CITIC Pacific—marks a key step in our journey toward 100% clean energy by 2050. We will continue innovating, promoting a low-carbon society and supporting Hong Kong in achieving net-zero emissions.”
Low of CLP Power added, “We are thrilled to support SUNeVision with site-specific RECs, helping them achieve their clean energy goals. CLP Power will continue to partner with businesses to enable low-carbon operations and support the HKSAR Government’s carbon reduction targets.”
Lai, Project Manager at GVL, remarked, “We view landfills as untapped power sources, and this project exemplifies renewable energy’s potential to offer the local community sustainable, reliable solar energy. With support from authorities, partners, and local engineers, we look forward to overcoming challenges and providing Hong Kong with diverse low-carbon solutions.”
