NEFIN, a leading green independent power producer in the Asia Pacific region, and MYDIN Mohamed Holdings Berhad (MYDIN), Malaysia’s largest Halal wholesale and retail chain, have announced a partnership to implement carbon-neutral energy solutions, driving sustainability efforts within the retail industry. This collaboration, the first of its kind in the southern region, involves NEFIN conducting a detailed energy audit (DEA) and installing solar systems to boost clean energy generation and usage, marking a significant stride towards a greener future in retail.
The retail sector is a substantial contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in Malaysia, accounting for 10% of the country’s total emissions, with electricity consumption constituting 40% of the sector’s total energy use. Malaysia has committed to achieving climate neutrality and reducing greenhouse gas intensity against GDP by 45% by 2030 compared with 2005 levels. This partnership will assist MYDIN in reducing carbon emissions and energy consumption, setting a new standard for sustainable practices in the retail sector.
Datuk Wira (Dr) Haji Ameer Ali Mydin, managing director of MYDIN, said: “We are thrilled to embark on this partnership with NEFIN. This collaboration perfectly aligns with MYDIN Prihatin #forfuture’s mission to promote sustainability and environmental responsibility. Our dedication to environmental conservation has always been a cornerstone of our values as a responsible retailer, and this partnership reaffirms our commitment to a more sustainable future.
“Following the completion of Phase 1, MYDIN is excited to move forward with Phase 2 and we plan to expand the use of clean energy across all our mall locations. We are eagerly anticipating the outcomes of this partnership and the positive impact it will have on both our operations and the environment.”
As part of the collaboration, NEFIN will propose ideal Energy Efficiency solutions to MYDIN, focusing on HVAC Retrofits/Chiller optimization. NEFIN will also deploy cutting-edge technology in solar photovoltaic panels, specifically the N-type solar PV panels from Jinko Solar, across six MYDIN sites.
The combined solar energy system capacity is expected to reach approximately 7.9MW, enabling MYDIN to save RM71,046,000 and offset 199,002 tons of CO2 emissions over the system’s 30-year lifetime.
Chong Bor Hung, managing director of NEFIN SEA, highlighted the transformative impact of the collaboration, emphasizing MYDIN’s pioneering role in reducing carbon emissions and setting new sustainable standards in the retail sector. NEFIN, with its vast experience in generating renewable energy, remains committed to advancing sustainability and contributing significantly to Malaysia’s sustainability goals through this partnership with MYDIN.
