Johor Plantations Berhad (Johor Plantations) affirms its commitment to produce sustainable essentials for the nation through an official document exchange with Gas Malaysia Berhad (GMB) and Eonmetall Technology Sdn Bhd (ETSB) during the Asia Pacific Climate Week (APCW) 2023, held in Johor Bahru. The exchange ceremony was witnessed by the minister of natural resources, environment and climate change of Malaysia, Nik Nazmi bin Nik Ahmad.
In August 2023, Johor Plantations commenced supplying gas to Gas Malaysia Virtual Pipeline Sdn Bhd (GMVP) through its first biomethane plant located in Sedenak, Johor. The plant is the latest milestone in Johor Plantations’ roadmap to provide sustainable energy solutions and is in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 7 – ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. During the document exchange, Johor Plantations and GMB confirmed a purchase agreement between the two companies for GMB subsidiary, GMVP to purchase biomethane and BioCNG (Compressed Natural Gas) and supply it throughout Malaysia via GMB’s natural gas distribution network.
Additionally, Johor Plantations formalised the handing over of their Palm Fibre Oil Extraction (PFOE) plant, also located in Sedenak, from ETSB which was contracted to build it. The PFOE plant forms part of Johor Plantations ‘waste to wealth’ initiative which emphasises contribution towards a circular economy through sustainable usage and recycling of palm oil products. At the PFOE plant, oil is extracted from mesocarp fibres from processed fresh fruit bunches to produce red palm oil.
Mohd Faris Adli Shukery, managing director of Johor Plantations, said “We have a responsibility to cultivate a sustainable and bright future by addressing our nation’s socioeconomic needs through our business ventures. Our biomethane and PFOE plants represent our latest efforts to innovate our business with renewable energy and green technology. We firmly believe that these investments will enrich our oil palm business financially while delivering sustainable returns to our stakeholders for a greener, low-carbon future.”
“We commend Johor Plantations for their commitment to sustainable practices through their innovative initiatives in biomethane utilisation and palm fibre oil extraction. Their dedication to environmental stewardship and participation in the United Nations Global Compact exemplifies their proactive approach towards creating a more sustainable future. We encourage more companies to follow their lead in integrating responsible and ethical practices into their operations for the betterment of our planet and communities,” said Edey Suresh, Johor state director for the UN Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei (UNGCMYB).
Johor Plantations’ initiatives in Sedenak are aligned with the company’s long-term strategy to promote clean energy usage nationwide as well as actively contribute to a regenerative, circular economy. They are also a testament to the company’s adherence to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles which include a target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
