Malaysia’s booming construction industry, which contributed RM53.44 billion to the GDP in 2022, is heeding the call for eco-conscious practices amidst climate change challenges. Acknowledging the need to reduce its carbon footprint, the sector is set to transform through sustainable initiatives. According to Professor Dominic C.Y Foo from the University of Nottingham Malaysia, maintaining the safe Carbon Dioxide (CO2) concentration at 350 parts per million (ppm) is crucial. However, Malaysia recorded alarming levels, reaching 417 ppm in May 2020.
To address this, CIDB will host engaging discussions at the International Construction Transformation Conference 2023 (ICTC 2023) and BuildXpo’s open forums, centered around the theme “Leading ESG in Construction.” These events, aligned with the International Construction Week (ICW) 2023, aim to promote sustainable practices and innovations within the industry.
The ICTC 2023, scheduled for November 14 and 15, will feature industry leaders sharing best practices and innovations linked to the ESG framework. Topics include the PLC Transformation Programme by Bursa Malaysia, Sustainable Finance Initiatives by banking institutions, and global case studies on sustainable infrastructures.
The BuildXpo Open Forums, taking place from November 15 to 17, will delve deeper into sustainability discussions. Experts will explore topics ranging from sustainable materials and project management techniques to disruptive technology innovations. Sessions will cover timber verification services, flood-resistant housing, cloud-based technology migration, and innovative project management for ESG excellence.
Richard Teo, Chairman of Qube Integrated Malaysia, emphasized that BuildXpo 2023 is committed to promoting sustainability, innovation, and ESG practices in the construction industry. The event provides a platform for learning, collaboration, and growth, facilitating the industry’s transition towards a greener and more sustainable future.
