Enlit Asia 2024, the premier energy conference for the ASEAN region, commenced today a the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) in Kuala Lumpur. Under the theme “Enabling a Multidimensional Energy Transition in ASEAN,” the event draws inspiration from Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), setting the stage for vital discussions on the region’s sustainable energy future.
As the sole platform in ASEAN uniting the entire energy supply chain, Enlit Asia brings together industry leaders, key stakeholders, and experts for three days of dynamic discussions and collaboration.
Following last year’s successful event in Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur assumes the spotlight, capitalising on Malaysia’s ongoing energy transition journey, guided by the NETR.
In his opening address, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to fostering a sustainable and resilient energy future, both nationally and across the ASEAN region.
He highlighted the nation’s strategies to diversify the energy mix, enhance energy efficiency, and embrace advanced technologies such as hydrogen and grid modernisation to support energy transition.
Akmal also underscored ASEAN’s key role in the global energy transition, stressing the importance of regional collaboration. “No single country or entity can achieve this monumental task alone. Strong partnerships across borders, industries, and sectors are essential,” he said, adding that the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) would be a central focus during Malaysia’s chairmanship of the ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) in 2025, promoting renewable energy uptake while ensuring cross-border energy security.
Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), Malaysia’s leading utility and the official utility partner of Enlit Asia, plays a critical role in advancing the nation’s energy transition. TNB President and CEO, Datuk Ir. Megat, emphasised the need for harmonised regulatory frameworks across ASEAN to fully unlock the APG’s potential, facilitating regional collaboration and shared energy benefits.
The first day of Enlit Asia 2024 saw a vibrant exchange of ideas, with panels discussing ASEAN’s collective ambition of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Ramesh Singaram, President and CEO Asia of GE Vernova, stressed the urgency of climate action, noting that the coming decade must focus on collaboration and swift implementation of sustainable technologies.
Simon Hoare, Portfolio Director of Enlit Asia, expressed his enthusiasm for the event’s strong start, stating, “The first day has sparked engaging discussions, furthering our mission to foster collaboration across ASEAN’s unique energy landscape.”
The next two days will delve into crucial topics, including grid modernisation, sustainable power generation, and financing the green future, with contributions from leading regional energy players such as PT PLN (Persero), SP Group, EGAT, and others.
As Enlit Asia 2024 progresses, the event is poised to propel ASEAN’s energy transition, driving critical conversations and showcasing cutting-edge solutions for a sustainable future.
