East Ventures and The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin Indonesia) have officially unveiled ECOVISEA, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at helping companies measure and manage their environmental impact. ECOVISEA, standing for Emission Calculator & Visualization Southeast Asia, is a free web-based global greenhouse gas (GHG) calculator developed in collaboration with WRI Indonesia as a knowledge partner.
This innovative tool is a direct outcome of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between East Ventures, Kadin Indonesia (via its program: Kadin Net Zero Hub), and WRI Indonesia. The MoU, inked on November 11, 2022, during East Ventures’ breakout session at the Indonesia Net Zero Summit 2022, underscores a shared commitment towards achieving net-zero targets.
Indonesia, ranking among the top 10 global emitters with approximately 1.48 GtCO2e annual contribution to GHG emissions, faces the imperative of concerted efforts to meet the Paris Agreement target of limiting the global temperature increase to 1.5°C by 2050.
ECOVISEA serves as a crucial step forward, offering companies, ranging from large enterprises to startups, a user-friendly platform to calculate and measure their carbon footprints. Despite the urgency, many Indonesian companies have yet to assess their emissions due to a lack of GHG accounting skills and knowledge.
Shinta W. Kamdani, Coordinating Vice Chairwoman for Maritime, Investment, and Foreign Affairs of Kadin Indonesia, emphasized the significance of ECOVISEA in supporting national companies on their journey to becoming Net Zero Companies. She believes the tool will play a pivotal role in achieving the government’s emission reduction targets.
Avina Sugiarto, Partner at East Ventures, expressed the venture’s delight in contributing to sustainability through ECOVISEA. The tool, developed in collaboration with KADIN Indonesia and WRI Indonesia, streamlines the carbon calculation process, empowering businesses to visualize and strategize emission reduction effectively.
ECOVISEA focuses on three scopes to calculate emissions: Scope 1 (direct emissions), Scope 2 (indirect emissions from purchased energy), and some parts of Scope 3 (other indirect emissions in the value chain). Climatiq, a carbon calculation engine, provides emission factor data, adhering to global standards like the GHG Protocol and ISO 14067.
Companies can register on ecovisea.com, undergo verification, and then follow step-by-step instructions to upload their data. The tool provides real-time access to detailed breakdowns and visualizations, aiding in informed decision-making. While the current version supports Scopes 1, 2, and partial Scope 3, the full version is expected to launch in the first half of 2024.
Nirarta Samadhi, Country Director WRI Indonesia, emphasized the importance of accurate emissions tracking for industrial decarbonization efforts in Indonesia. WRI Indonesia’s involvement in ECOVISEA ensures adherence to the GHG protocol and methodology.
