The Coastal Sustainability Alliance (CSA), led by Kuok Maritime Group (KMG), has announced plans to advance Singapore’s maritime biofuel ecosystem with investments of up to S$10 million. This initiative, spearheaded by Alliance members Green COP and Ken Energy, was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed at the Tech Stage (EXPO @SMW) during Singapore Maritime Week 2024.
Over the next two years, the CSA aims to develop stable B30, B40, and B50 biofuel blends, with B50 derived from 50% agri-waste to Biobutanol, poised to significantly reduce carbon emissions in maritime operations.
This roadmap includes biofuel certification, sea trials, a production plant by 2025, and commercial-scale production by 2026. An initial S$500,000 angel investment will establish a pilot plant for agri-waste processing, with over S$10 million expected for scaling production.
These efforts will contribute to decarbonizing the maritime sector and developing Singapore’s coastal ecosystem to meet the rising demand for sustainable biofuels.
Tan Thai Yong, managing director of Kuok Maritime Group and Chairperson of CSA Council, emphasized the importance of fostering partnerships to deliver sustainable maritime solutions.
The CSA is actively driving biofuel development to reduce carbon emissions, secure a local biofuel supply, and enhance Singapore’s global standing in biofuels.
Ken Energy will play a key role in commercializing Biobutanol, optimizing its use in maritime operations. Green COP specializes in converting biowaste into biofuels efficiently and sustainably.
Green COP recently partnered with 3Y Energy to develop green biofuel blends for transportation sectors. The B50 blend significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to B30, supporting the maritime sector’s transition to greener energy sources.
The CSA aims to expand its biofuel ecosystem through further collaborations, advancing technological and logistical capabilities.
The recent PXO Electric Fleet Signing & MOU Ceremony marked a milestone in CSA’s sustainability efforts, including the construction of locally designed electric vessels and welcoming new members across various sectors.
The expanded alliance will focus on green financing, ESG initiatives, vessel adoption, electrification, and technology enhancements for coastal logistics.
