UOB Malaysia’s newly constructed corporate headquarters, UOB Plaza 1 Kuala Lumpur, has received the platinum certification from GreenRE Real Estate (GreenRE). This recognition marks UOB Plaza 1 as the first bank headquarters in Malaysia acknowledged for its sustainable design, construction, and wellness features.
Completed in September 2022, the distinctive lantern-shaped office building is situated in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, serving as the professional home to over 3,000 of the bank’s employees, including its main branch and wealth center. UOB Plaza 1 is designed to foster a high-performing and future-ready workforce, featuring open collaborative areas and workspaces equipped with state-of-the-art technology to encourage collaboration, creativity, and culture.
Ng Wei Wei, CEO of UOB Malaysia, expressed her pride in being the first bank in Malaysia to achieve GreenRE’s platinum certification for their headquarters. She emphasized that UOB Plaza 1 reflects the significant transformation underway in UOB Malaysia, showcasing their dedication to sustainability and support for the country’s net-zero ambition.
She noted that the building serves as a physical manifestation of confidence in Malaysia’s long-term potential and their ongoing commitment to the country, its people, and customers.
Datuk Seri FD Iskandar, chairman of GreenRE, commended UOB Malaysia for its outstanding sustainability efforts, maintaining the highest standards of green building practices for its corporate headquarters. He emphasized that this achievement underscores UOB Malaysia’s dedication to creating a green space prioritizing environmental responsibilities and the well-being of its people.
Key considerations leading to GreenRE’s platinum certification for UOB Plaza 1 include sustainable architecture, efficient energy-water-waste management, and a focus on people’s well-being. The building incorporates environmentally-friendly and non-toxic materials, energy-efficient systems, water-efficient fittings, and a rainwater harvesting system.
UOB Plaza 1 places a significant emphasis on employee well-being, offering abundant natural light, superior indoor air quality, green spaces, a gymnasium, childcare center, health clinic, and bistros at every floor. Two botanically-inspired sky gardens on levels 18 and 29, along with other recreational amenities, contribute to a positive and healthy working environment.
UOB Malaysia’s sustainability efforts were recently recognized at The Asian Business Review’s inaugural ESG Business Awards 2023, where the bank received awards for promoting Renewable Energy and Workplace Wellness. GreenRE’s rating system aligns with global standards, adhering to the World Green Building Council’s Quality Assurance Guide for Green Building Rating Tools. This ensures alignment in the development, implementation, and operation of green building rating tools.
