Major Collaboration Aims to Accelerate Sustainability and Decarbonization in Energy Sector
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

PETRONAS, Gentari Sdn Bhd (Gentari), Amazon, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are joining forces to accelerate their sustainability and decarbonization efforts within the rapidly evolving global energy transition.

This initiative aligns with PETRONAS’ dedication to providing affordable, low-carbon energy solutions while simultaneously reducing emissions from its operations. Leveraging Gentari’s expertise in clean energy solutions, this collaboration also supports Amazon’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

This collaboration encompasses a holistic approach to sustainability, technological advancement, and socioeconomic progress. Key areas of exploration include:

  1. Electrifying Amazon’s India Transportation Network: Gentari will assist in decarbonizing Amazon’s delivery network in India by collaborating with third-party delivery partners to electrify their vehicle fleets. Amazon has set a target to deploy 10,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in its Indian delivery fleet by 2025. Gentari will provide EVs and fleet management services to Amazon’s third-party delivery partners.
  2. Advanced Plant of the Future: PETRONAS and AWS will explore the development of a cutting-edge plant incorporating state-of-the-art technology, robotics, and automation, similar to those utilized in Amazon’s warehouses and facilities. This aims to enhance PETRONAS’ ongoing research and development efforts, particularly in the production of microalgae oil as feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel.
  3. Integration of Low-Carbon Solutions: Amazon will assess PETRONAS’ low-carbon and alternative fuel solutions for potential integration across various sectors, including mobility, stationary power applications, and carbon management.
  4. Leveraging AWS Cloud Technology: PETRONAS will continue to utilize AWS cloud technology to expand and enhance its existing solutions, such as SETEL (Malaysia’s first e-wallet for fuel purchases at PETRONAS stations) and STEAR (a cloud-based logistics solution and services platform for the offshore industry).
  5. Digital Skills Development: AWS will further empower both technical and non-technical personnel at PETRONAS, bolstering their digital literacy through AWS Training & Certification programs. This commitment aligns with AWS’ broader mission to cultivate a digitally skilled workforce to support Malaysia’s digital economy.

Datuk Bacho Pilong, senior vice president of project delivery and technology at PETRONAS, emphasized, “Collaborations like this, built upon our enduring relationship with Amazon and AWS and Gentari’s expertise in clean energy solutions, are crucial to support the transition towards cleaner energy in Asia and worldwide.”

Sushil Purohit, CEO of Gentari, added, “This collaboration signifies a pivotal moment as we strive to lead the energy transition, driving change towards a cleaner, more sustainable future. Gentari, with its comprehensive offerings in renewable energy, hydrogen, and green mobility, is excited to support Amazon’s responsible approach to decarbonizing their operations and achieving their net-zero goals.”

Conor McNamara, managing director of AWS ASEAN, stated, “Achieving a net-zero future demands immediate and extensive innovation across all industries, including energy. We are deepening our collaboration with PETRONAS and Gentari to advance our shared objectives of creating a more sustainable world through technology and expertise. Alongside PETRONAS and Gentari, and with our upcoming AWS Region in Malaysia, we eagerly anticipate supporting businesses and communities in advancing their climate and digitalization aspirations with cutting-edge cloud technology and talent development.”
